THE ROOM ON THE ROOF story is the first novel written by Ruskin Bond. He has written this story for a boy who is 16 years old. This book is inspired by a 16-year-old boy named Rusty. This story of an orphaned boy, Rusty, of Anglo-Indian descent, living in a European colony in Dehradun with his guardian Mr. Harrison, who wants him to stay away from Indians and groom him as a pure Englishman.

The main protagonist of this book is rusty, who is an orphan. He lives with Harrison in Dehradun. Such an accident happens in his life. After which he leaves home and runs away. After running away from home, he learns the realities of life. This story is the story of his society and growing up.

Rusty and Harrison lived in the European Colony of Dehradun. Rusty’s guardians did not like being with any of his Indians. He wanted Rusty to be with the English people only, he became like them. Harrison wanted Rusty’s habits to be the same as the English ones.

Rusty was suffocated due to this behavior. He wanted to live his life in his way. It was raining a few days later when Rusty was coming home on foot. She then gets some on the way which gives her a lift. And at some time both of them become good friends.

A few days later some Rusty decides to meet some of his friends, who are living their lives in their way. Now after meeting with him, Rusty wants to rebel against Harrison. Because he likes the life of those people more than his life

A few days when Rusty is walking home after spending some time with Indian friends. So he already meets Harrison at his house. He mourns seeing them. Because he didn’t think Harrison would be at home yet. Now Harrison gets angry seeing him in this condition and beats him.

PART-1

Holi happens the next day, then Rusty’s friends take him to play Holi. He plays Holi with them all day. Even Harrison does not recognize him when he comes home in the evening. After a while, he learns that he is Harrison. Now they get angry and beat him up.

Rusty also gets angry with them, because Rusty has already revolted. Now he raises his hand on Harrison. And before Harrison’s wife arrives, he runs away from home.

Now Rusty spends the whole night alone, he has never been out of the house before. That night he realizes that life is not as easy as he seems. Now the next morning he comes to pick up Somy and takes her to his house.

He finds new jobs for Rusty. Rusty’s English is very good. Therefore, he soon gets the job of teaching English.

PART-2

He gets a job with Mr. Kapoor to teach his son. And at the same time, he gets that food and living room. Now he is happy here. Because he gets what he likes. He was living his life in his way. A few days later the same goes on and he falls in love with Mr. Kapoor’s wife.

Mr. Kapoor becomes the drinker. Therefore his wife does not like him much. She is very beautiful, and she is also attracted like Rusty. And he too falls in love with Rusty.

She also feels that she is not in love with her alcoholic husband. Now Rusty seems happy. But this happiness does not stop for long in his life.

FEW DAYS LATER:-

Kapoor and his wife leave for Delhi, leaving Kishan with Rusty. Shortly afterward comes the news that he has an accident, in which Kapoor’s wife dies.

Rusty is alone once again. Kishan takes her aunt to Haridwar. Now Rusty lives alone in that house. And he feels lonely in that house.

A few days later, Somy comes to meet him and tells him that he is going to Amritsar for a few days. Now Rusty becomes even more depressed and thinks he has nothing left. He now feels that he should go somewhere.

END OF THE NOVEL

Rusty decide to seek help from the British Embassy and moves to England. But before leaving, he thinks that once he should go to Haridwar and meet Kishan, he now goes out to meet him.

And he goes to know that Kapoor has married second and Kishan has now become a thief. And the police are also looking for him. He leaves, then he sees Kishan on the way.

Now Kishan tells Rusty to stop there and speak in Dehradun to start a new life. Rusty likes his things. Rusty knew what conditions Kishan had to become a thief. Because he too had gone through this life. Now both of them come back to their home and start a new life.
